PORTLAND, Maine — A Biddeford man was seriously injured early Sunday morning in Portland when his car hit the guardrail at Exit 47 on Interstate 95, flipped over and landed on its roof on the Maine Turnpike.

Tamer Tilahun, 24, was listed in critical condition late Sunday morning at Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to the Maine State Police.

Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation, Trooper Lee Vanadestine said.

The crash occurred about 2:30 a.m. Sunday when roads were snow-covered and temperatures were below freezing, Vanadestine said.

Tilahun was getting on the turnpike at Exit 47, which is Route 25, according to information posted on the Maine Turnpike Authority’s website. His 2000 white Mercury Marquis hit the guardrail, became airborne, flipped over and landed on its roof, according to Vanadestine.

It took rescue crews more than an hour to extricate Tilahun from the vehicle, the trooper said.

Tilahun suffered a broken back and other broken bones in the crash, Vanadestine said.
