PORTLAND, Ore – Police said they arrested a woman who threw a full can of beer at a noted criminal psychologist before stealing his SUV Friday night in Northwest Portland.

Dr. Kevin McGovern, 69, was in his car on the corner of Northwest 25th Avenue and Thurman Street when he said a woman, who appeared to be on narcotics, jumped into the passenger seat.

“I told her to get out, she wouldn’t,” McGovern told KGW. “I told her I was going to call 911. She jumped over into the driver’s seat, threw a can of beer at me and drove off.”

Oregon State Police troopers found the suspect, 38-year-old Brooke Kristin Defrees, and the stolen SUV on Interstate 205 in West Linn.

Defrees was arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges including hit-and-run, third degree robbery and fourth degree assault.

Police said Defrees threw a 24-ounce can of Steel Reserve at McGovern.

McGovern said he tried to hang onto the car as Defrees drove away. He wasn’t seriously injured but his arm was cut during the robbery.

Police returned the stolen SUV to McGovern’s home.

McGovern is a criminal psychologist who has appeared often on KGW to discuss the thought processes of criminals.
