Prosecutors want to find out if something is amiss in the city administration of Newberg.

The district attorneys of Yamhill and Marion counties weren’t explaining specifically why, but said Sunday that they’ve asked Oregon State Police to investigate Newberg City Manager Jacque Betz for possible criminal misconduct.

“(W)itnesses and information have come forth raising questions about the propriety of the conduct of Ms. Betz, some of which may involve the violation of criminal statutes,” Yamhill District Attorney Brad Berry and Marion County District Attorney Walt Beglau wrote in a news release.

Betz had placed Newberg-Dundee Police Chief Brian Casey on administrative leave on Wednesday, but she also did not publicly explaining why.

Casey told KGW TV last week that he hasn’t been accused of any crimes.

“Why am I being put on administrative leave, stripped of my policing ability? It makes no sense to me,” Casey told the TV station.

The Yamhill DA’s Office has asked the Marion County DA’s Office to review the results of the Oregon State Police investigation into Betz. Berry said he’s transferring the case to avoid any perceived potential conflict of interest.

Betz has been Newberg’s city manager since June 2014.
