Whether they’re fried, steamed, boiled or stuffed, few dishes are as comforting as the dumpling. Around the world, nearly every culture offers something delicious wrapped in dough. 

In celebration of one of our favorite foods, The Oregonian/OregonLive will be hosting Portland’s first Dumpling Week from Feb. 1-7. Throughout the week, we will publish features and recipes online and in print, and 19 Portland restaurants, including Kachka, Bollywood Theater, Departure, Imperial, Xico and more, will be offering a special dumpling dish on their menus.

You’ll be able to slurp down pork and crab xiao long bao at Northeast Portland’s Aviary and then satisfy your sweet tooth with a “berries and dumplings” ice cream sundae at nearby Salt & Straw.

After work, you can grab a seat at downtown’s Little Bird for goat cheese gnocchi with mashed English peas, lamb tongue and fresh Oregon truffles or get in line at Southwest Portland’s Grassa for their crispy semolina dumplings with Dungeness crab, porcini mushrooms and house pancetta.

The readers who eat their way through a certain number of dumplings will be eligible for prizes, including restaurant gift certificates and an advance copy of Jenn Louis’ upcoming cookbook “Pasta by Hand.”
