Jacob Capra, 3-star OL, commits to Oregon Ducks over Oregon State Beavers … – OregonLive.com
Consensus three-star offensive lineman Jacob Capra avoided any April Fools’ Day confusion about his announcement, instead waiting until Thursday to reveal that he had committed to the Oregon Ducks over offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Oregon State, UCLA, Utah, Washington and others.
The 6-foot-5, 275-pound prospect out of Placer High School (Auburn, California) committed to Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich and offensive line coach Steve Greatwood on Wednesday during an unofficial visit, but wanted to avoid speculation about a possible prank.
“I committed (Wednesday), but I didn’t want to put it out there on social media because of April Fools’ Day,” he said. “I wasn’t sure people would believe me.”
For Capra, who said he plans to enroll in January, his decision came down to feeling at home around the football program.
“I am very happy. It hit all the checkpoints I had in my head for a college,” he said. “It’s nice to have the feeling of fitting in with a football program.”
That feeling was solidified while watching practice this week, specifically the coaching of Greatwood, Capra’s future position coach.
“It’s an amazing opportunity. He’s a great practice. I saw him in spring practice during the morning of my visit,” he explained. “His coaching style fits me perfect and everything seems like it would translate to me as an athlete very well. I’m so stoked on that.”
Strangely, Capra’s football future may not have ever been possible without an unofficial intervention held by his parents.
Growing up a snowboarder, his parents demanded that he and his two brothers make a switch in sport after sudden growth spurts.
“We snowboarded all our lives on the mountain,” Capra told The Oregonian/OregonLive. “Once I hit about 12-and-a-half – me and my brothers – we had a huge growth spurt and my parents said, ‘You guys got to play football. You’re too big to snowboard all of the time.’ “
That move proved to be prophetic as both Johnny (Utah) and Jacob (Oregon) Capra are Pac-12-caliber athletes.
With its latest pledge, Oregon is up to six known commitments in the class of 2016. Capra is the first offensive lineman to join the fold.
