Man shot dead in police encounter in NE Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. — A man died after an officer-involved shooting Sunday night in the parking lot of a Northeast Portland grocery store, police said.
Two officers approached a car at 11:35 p.m. parked on the west side of the WinCo Foods at Northeast 122nd Avenue and San Rafael Street.
Shots were fired and the man was injured, according to Portland Police Bureau spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson. Officers gave the man medical aid until paramedics arrived and determined the man was dead.
Simpson added the entire event happened very quickly, as is often the case in unexpected confrontations.
A gun was found at the scene, Simpson said. No police officers were injured.
A man and a woman were detained at the scene. They were not injured, Simpson said. Police were holding the pair as witnesses, but it was unclear what their connection is to the case, or whether they were in the car involved.
The car was towed from the scene after a long overnight investigation. Tape marked what appeared to be several bullet holes in the windshield of the grey VW sedan, on the driver’s side. So far police have not said if the suspect was in the driver’s seat when police fired on him.
Portland Mayor Charlie Hales visited the shooting scene after midnight, along with representatives from the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office. A slew of investigators were on scene, including members of the East County Major Crimes Team.
The results of the investigation will be turned over to the district attorney’s office. Police officers involved in the shooting will be on paid administrative until the jury proceedings are over.
