PORTLAND — A 28-year-old man was found dead in his Portland jail cell on New Year’s Eve.

William Coupchiak was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on Thursday morning on charges that he violated his parole, The Oregonian reported.

More than 12 hours later, at 10:37 p.m., a sheriff’s deputy found him “unresponsive” in his jail during a routine check.

Emergency officials were unable to revive Coupchiak.

Sgt. Steve Dangler said Coupchiak’s last known address was in Portland, but he was homeless.

The cause of death is still uncertain, but county officials expect to learn more from a toxicology test and autopsy later this week.
