PORTLAND, Ore. – Police are searching for the driver in a hit-and-run that killed a man in Southeast Portland early Sunday morning.
The victim, identified as Chris Chandler, 34, of Portland, was hit by a car in front of the Goodfoot Pub and Lounge, at Southeast 29th Avenue and Stark Street, around 2 a.m., police said. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died.
Employees at the pub, which features local bands, said Chandler was a longtime customer who was well-known in the Portland music community. They said he was getting into a friend’s car after watching a Saturday night show at Goodfoot when he was struck.
Witnesses said a white car that appeared to be a Honda Civic 4-door struck Chandler and then took off. The car had an out-of-state license plate that either had these numbers, or similar: I-V-D-1-0-3-6.
Police said the vehicle may also have noticeable front-end damage and a broken windshield. Anyone who spots the car is urged to call 911 immediately.
The suspect was described as a white man with short, possibly blonde hair. Anyone with information about the suspect or the hit-and-run crash was encouraged to call the Police Non-Emergency Line at 503-823-3333.
Goodfoot Pub employees said some people tried to run after the car after it struck Chandler. They said the driver did not stop.
Local musicians who knew Chandler said were planning a jam session in his honor, to start at 8 p.m., Sunday at Goodfoot.
They said he had attended hundreds of shows there over the years, and it was one of his favorite places to enjoy local music.
