Oregon ranked 7th-best 'Food-Friendly State' in nation – kgw.com
PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregon is one of the country’s most “food-friendly” states, according to a study conducted by Retale, a global network for location-based shopping information.
The study looked at the variety of restaurants, food carts, and farmers markets in each state, along with accessibility and diversity of food options, including health food.
Oregon was ranked number seven in the analysis, with Washington state a dash lower on the menu, at number 10. Rhode Island bit off the top spot.
“Rhode Island is the food-friendly powerhouse in these fifty states – and for good reason,” the website complimented. “This pint-sized non-island is stocked with top-tier, flavorful foods – many of which are ‘all their own’ in the same way New Orleans claims beignets and Kentucky claims fried chicken.”
Oregon # 7
Oregon was lauded on the website not only for its eateries (apparently the fifth-most restaurants per million inhabitants), but also its rich soil, “that allows for incredible vegetation and a great state of culinary vibrancy.”
And if that isn’t mouth-watering enough, the researchers recommended pairing the perfect food with Oregon’s “top notch” wine, micro-brews, or nuts.
“Oregon’s glorious Willamette Valley grows a full 98 percent of all United States hazelnuts—thus becoming the most-touted vacation destination for Nutella lovers. Furthermore, local eating is at an all-time high in Portland, a cultural mecca and general destination for foodies everywhere,” the website explained.
Washington # 10
Washington state’s rich culinary history and cuisine made it “a natural-fit” for the top ten list, according to the study. Accolades were given for the tasty salmon, shellfish, moose, elk, caribou, wild mushrooms and berries that the state if known for.
“Washingtonians focus on fresh ingredients, simple preparation, and were harbingers of the organic movement,” according to the study.
The online ranking also included an interactive #foodfriendly infographic explaining the study.
