PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Business Alliance on Wednesday posted a petition on change.org calling on Mayor Charlie Hales and the city council to improve the quality of life for the thousands of homeless people in Portland.

The petition wants the city to provide more emergency shelters to reduce the number of people camping and panhandling in public areas. The petition says with so many homeless people in the city, families and visitors feel unsafe.

When asked about how the city should pay for more shelters, a spokesperson for the Portland Business Alliance said they’re not experts on funding and they’re looking to the city for solutions.

The petition already has more than 1,000 signatures.

KGW called the mayor’s office Thursday, but did not get a call back.

A homeless count released in June showed the number of homeless families with children increased by 24 percent from 2013.
