Portland police hunt for man who robbed 2 banks – Press Herald
A man robs the cPort Credit Union on Forest Avenue, then the Bank of America branch at One City Center downtown.
Portland police are investigating back-to-back bank robberies in Portland that may have been committed by the same person.
No one was injured in the robberies.
The cPort Credit Union at 285 Forest Ave. was robbed around 11:45 a.m. Friday by a man who showed a handgun and demanded cash.
A few minutes later, a man matching the description of the credit union robber held up the Bank of America branch at One City Center on busy Monument Square. He was last seen going into the parking garage at One City Center.
Police did not believe the man stayed in the garage, but locked it down as they searched from car to car with a police dog just in case he was hiding there or discarded items that might be evidence. No one was allowed to access their vehicles while the search was ongoing. The parking garage was reopened to the public around 2 p.m.
Stephanie Beattie was headed into One City Center to teach a class at the Bay Club when she passed a man she believes robbed the Bank of America branch.
“He looked suspicious. He was jogging out of the bank,” she said. “It’s 70 degrees out and he was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and being conscious of keeping the hood on.”
Beattie passed within 3 feet of the man as he left the bank through the doors into the One City Center lobby but she did not see a gun or money and says she couldn’t see the man’s face clearly because of the hood and the mirrored sunglasses he was wearing. His pants were so loose they looked as if they would fall down as he ran away, she said.
