Portland tech paychecks jump 9% – Portland Business Journal (blog)
Portland technology professionals saw their paychecks jump on average 9 percent in 2014, according to the latest salary survey by technology job website Dice.
On average Portland tech workers earned $91,556, up from an average wage of $84,295 in 2013.
Since 2008, tech workers have seen their pay rise by 18 percent, according to Dice.
The survey found the average U.S. tech worker pulled in $89,450, a boost of 2 percent over 2013. Not surprisingly the highest paychecks were in Silicon Valley were tech workers earned an average of $112,610, which is up 4 percent year-over-year.
The second highest paid workers are in Seattle where the average salary grew 5 percent to $99,423.
Salaries are rising, but Dice also surveyed satisfaction with compensation and confidence in the job market and there are some findings to make employers nervous.
Overall, 52 percent said they are satisfied with compensation, but that is down slightly from 54 percent in 2013. This percentage has dropped every year since 2012, according to Dice.
Workers also indicated confidence in the job market, as 67 percent said they could find a new position in the next year.
“As demand for technology professionals rises and highly skilled talent is harder to find, the pressure is being reflected where it counts: paychecks,” said Shravan Goli, President of Dice.com, in a written statement. “Still, tech pros are less happy with their earnings, signaling to companies that in order to recruit and retain the best candidates, offering more will be necessary.”
Portland has been reaping the benefit of its comparable affordability to other tech hubs to the north and south, but the talent competition is creeping in. Just last week, a group of Portland companies along with the city and the state released a slick new recruiting video to lure workers from out of the area to move to the Portland area.
