If your building doesn’t allow cats, or your roommate is allergic, you’ll soon be able to enjoy the company of up to 10 felines in a new Portland cafe.

Oregon’s first cat cafe and lounge, Purringtons, will open in Portland this Saturday. The space is divided into two lounges: one for petting cats and one for enjoying cafe drinks and treats in the more traditional sense.

Cafe owners Kristen and Sergio Castillo write on their website that patrons will be able to, of course, pet and play with the cats, but they also plan to have movie nights, ukulele lessons and readings.

Purringtons is partnered with the feline-only humane society Cat Adoption Team as a satellite adoption center. Each cat is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and has a clean bill of health. Patrons are invited to enjoy the cats inside the cafe (so you can’t bring your own), and because of their diet, you can’t feed them any human food.

Cat cafes originally became popular in Southeast Asia, starting in the 1990s. More than 150 cat cafes have opened in Japan alone, but the concept is still very new to America. There are currently three in California and one in New York.

OPB’s Kayo Lackey will have a full video on Purringtons next week.
