Updated at 9 p.m: Power has been restored
A power outage is snarling up the evening commute in Southeast Portland.
Portland General Electric reports that at least 1,600 homes and businesses are without power. The utility said it is aware of the outage and hopes to have electricity restored by 9:30 p.m.
Traffic lights are out on heavily traveled streets, such as Southeast Hawthorne and Southeast 20th Avenue. PGE says the outage is affecting those in the 97202 and 97214 zip codes.
Though the utility has not indicated the cause, witnesses have taken to social media to blame it on a blown transformer.
Around 6:30 p.m., cyclists were directing traffic around Southeast Grand Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard, said Lynne Palombo of The Oregonian/OregonLive.
Sgt. Pete Simpson, Portland police spokesman, said at 6:45 p.m. that he didn’t see any officers assigned to traffic duty in Southeast Portland.
This report will be updated as information becomes available.
