Smash-and-grab suspects drive truck through NE Portland Walgreens storefont – OregonLive.com
Would-be robbers smashed a pickup truck through the front entrance of a Walgreens drug store in Northeast Portland early Tuesday morning in an attempt to steal an ATM inside.
Sgt. Pete Simspon, a Portland Police Bureau spokesman, said the incident occurred at 4:13 a.m. at the store at 5420 N.E. 33rd Ave. No one was injured in the crash.
Lara Adler, who lives across the street from the Walgreens, said the sound of screeching tires woke her.
“It sounded like someone was screaming, or cheering them on or yelling,” Adler said. “And I didn’t know if that was the people who were driving, or people yelling at them to stop.
Police said it appears the truck was stolen and two suspects tried to use a large chain attached to the truck to remove the ATM, but were unsuccessful, Simpson said.
“It just sounded like a trash compactor, crashing, crunching glass,” Adler said.
Simpson said police used a K9 team to search the area unsuccessfully for the truck’s occupants. A tow truck removed the pickup truck from the store about an hour after the crash, he said.
