A man was struck and killed by oncoming traffic as he crossed Interstate 5 by foot Sunday.

The crash occurred at 5:49 p.m. on the southbound freeway in Southwest Portland, said Portland Police Sgt. Pete Simpson, a spokesman for the agency.

A witness administered CPR, but the man did not survive. Simpson said the man appeared to be in his 50s.

The driver stayed at the site of the crash near Hood Avenue, and the investigation is ongoing. Interstate 5 was closed for nearly four hours, and traffic was directed off the freeway.

Simpson said no additional details, including the man’s name, are yet available.

Update, 9:30 p.m.: All lanes traffic are now open on southbound Interstate 5.
