Good afternoon, stoners. Or should I say, good morning.

As you probably know, recreational marijuana becomes legal in the state of Oregon at the stroke of midnight on Wednesday, July 1. But applications for marijuana business licenses aren’t being accepted until early 2016, and weed stores aren’t expected to open until fall of that year. Which means weed will soon be legal, but there won’t be anywhere to buy it. Harsh realm!

While that would generally mean you have to grow your own (which, like, how do you even do that?), some budding marijuana-preneurs are taking advantage of this sticky situation to do a bit of guerrilla marketing. Yes, that means what you think it means.

According to The Oregonian, the Portland chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (or NORML) is inviting people 21 and over to gather on the west side of the Burnside Bridge for some dank buds, chill seeds, and educational pamphlets — all 100 percent gratis, courtesy of various growers. “While it becomes legal to possess and cultivate cannabis, there is no legal place in Oregon to buy marijuana itself or cannabis seeds and starts,” the group explains in a statement. “Portland NORML will educate the public and our partners will give away thousands of seeds and hundreds of pounds of marijuana this year so Washington state and the black market do not benefit from our new marijuana legality.”

They’ll also be giving growing lessons at a Saturday afternoon event. Fun for the whole family! (J/k it’s 21+.)

Because Portland loves its Mary Jane with all of its vibey alterna-heart, there will also be an event called “Weed The People” on Friday. “This is more than free weed,” quoth the website. “This is more than vendors, food and vapes. This is history in the making! Join us for a day to remember!” And then, towards the bottom: “Don’t be afraid of your freedom!”

The Weed the People website is quick to remind readers it’s not a contest, man, and all weed is special in its own unique way. They’ll have “budtenders” standing by to help you get blazed as responsibly and artisanally as possible.

The best news of all: You don’t need to be an Oregon resident to attend any of these events. So if you’re not afraid of your freedom, strap on your Birkenstocks and hoof it to Portlandia for some serious smokage this weekend. Then stay there forever because you’re not allowed to take weed out of the state and the rest of the country doesn’t want you, anyway.
